Sicario. 2015. USA. Directed by Denis Villeneuve. 121 min.
The existential battle between stateless narco-empires and the democratically elected republic (and their human surrogates) is ripped inside out in Denis Villeneuve's stylish thriller about the war on drugs on either side of the U.S.-Mexico border. Assumptions about the location of lawlessness and the definitions of criminality are continuously disposed of, and we are left to weigh the consequences of American self-righteousness. Sicario is expertly shot by master cinematographer Roger Deakins, and features knockout performances by Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, and Daniel Kaluuya. Courtesy of Lionsgate Films.
