Chicago’s Essanay Company signed Charles Chaplin away from Mack Sennett’s Keystone Studios in 1914 by dangling a salary increase and his own production unit. Chaplin lasted for one year, primarily due to his distaste for Chicago winters. His next stop was the Mutual Film Corp., where he was paid $10,000 per week. These four films track Chaplin’s rapid three-studio journey. Preserved from nitrate materials on loan from the Archive Film Agency with support from the Celeste Bartos Fund for Film Preservation.
