Viaggio in Italia (Journey to Italy). 1954. Italy. Directed by Roberto Rossellini. 86 min.

Screenplay by Rossellini, Vitaliano Brancati, from a story by Colette. With Ingrid Bergman, George Sanders. Although it was virtually ignored in the U.S. at the time of its release, Journey to Italy quickly became a touchstone for European filmmakers working toward a new, “modern” cinema, exerting a profound influence on the emerging “new waves” in France, Italy, and Scandinavia. During a road trip to Naples to dispose of a villa inherited from a recently deceased uncle, an English couple, Alex (George Sanders) and Katherine (Bergman), come to the realization that their marriage has died. A visit to Pompeii prompts a spiritual crisis that miraculously reunites them. Digital restoration courtesy Janus Films. English version. Selected by Isabella Rossellini.
