Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. 1941. USA. Directed by Victor Fleming. 113 min.
Screenplay by John Lee Mahin, Samuel Hoffenstein, from the novella by Robert Louis Stevenson. With Spencer Tracy, Ingrid Bergman, Lana Turner, Donald Crisp. Victor Fleming’s elaborate MGM adaptation of the Stevenson story has a distinctly Freudian tone, with Spencer Tracy’s repressed Victorian doctor discovering the thrill of unbridled sexuality (as kinky as the censors would allow) as he changes into the louche Mr. Hyde. Bergman plays the saucy barmaid who is brutalized into becoming Hyde’s mistress, while the good doctor remains loyal to his aristocratic fiancée, played by a prim Lana Turner. Courtesy Warner Bros. Selected by Ingrid Rossellini.
