Satansbraten (Satan’s Brew). 1976. Germany. Directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. In German; English subtitles. 112 min.
With Kurt Raab, Margit Carstensen, Helen Vita, Volker Spengler, Ingrid Caven, Marquard Bohm. A formerly successful and left-leaning writer, now strapped for cash and in the middle of a creative crisis, starts to impersonate German poet Stefan George, increasingly assuming the latter’s identity. Fassbinder himself described Satan’s Brew as “an aspect of myself, exaggerated into the grotesque.”
