Teen Kanya (Two Daughters). 1961. India. Written, directed, and music composed by Satyajit Ray. In Bengali; English subtitles. 114 min.
With Soumitra Chatterjee, Aparna Sen, Chandana Banerjee. This is the international release version (two stories instead of three) of Ray’s second film after the conclusion of his Apu Trilogy. Ray, who at this point was 40 years old and in full command of his medium, adapted two tales by the great Indian author Rabindranath Tagore. (Ray had been a protégée of the writer in his final years, at the university Tagore.) By composing his own music, beginning with this film, Ray was able to add to the emotional resonance of his work.
