Faunovo velmi pozdní odpoledne (The Very Late Afternoon of a Faun). 1983. Czechoslovakia. Directed by Věra Chytilová. Screenplay by Chytilová, Ester Krumbachová. With Leoš Suchařípa, Libuše Pospíšilová, Vlasta Špicnerová. 35mm, courtesy Národní filmový archiv. In Czech; English subtitles. 99 min.
An aging Don Juan flailingly seduces a parade of much younger women around Prague. Charming in spurts, the Faun (Leoš Suchařípa) lures women to his attic studio to boast about his antique furniture, gets drunk with friends at rooftop bars, and spies on topless sunbathers along the river. Director Věra Chytilová had an abiding interest in male misogynists, a persistent subject of interest for the great filmmaker. This marked the return of her key collaborator, screenwriter and set designer Ester Krumbachová, banned from filmmaking since 1972, with her first credited work in over a decade. By the hilarious finale, the Faun is thoroughly drunk, storming a stairwell—shoving over furniture, smashing the walls with his fists—in a fruitless act of destruction that is vintage Chytilová.
