Beginning his animation career in New York City in the late 1960’s, George Griffin went on become a galvanizing figure in the city’s animation community. From his studio on West 4th Street he has produced over thirty animated films distinguished by his experimental interest in the medium. Delight in the inventive and amusing capabilities of the animation process shines through works that reflect on how moving images are perceived and the hands-on nature of his practice. This program of nine signature films, opens with Head, a convulsive riff on his own face, and concludes with MoMA’s restoration of his masterful Lineage, described by animation historian Jerry Beck as “a mash-up of animation history, documentary self-portraiture, and conceptualism.”
