Rose. 2026. Austria/Germany. Directed by Markus Schleinzer. Screenplay by Schleinzer, Alexander Brom. With Sandra Hüller, Caro Braun. DCP courtesy MUBI. In German; English subtitles. 94 min.
When the rewards of service in wartime are reserved only for men who survive the battle, one woman decides to make her own future from the rubble. Sandra Hüller disappears into the role of a soldier who returns to a small village in 17th-century Europe to reclaim his family land. This soldier is in fact a woman named Rose, who, while living and fighting as a man, took the identity of a fallen comrade. Despite initial skepticism, the community begins to embrace the industrious newcomer—leading to complications that imperil the entire scheme. Hüller’s performance earned the Best Leading Performance Award at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival.
