Minotaur (Минотавр). 2026. Latvia/France/Germany. Directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev. Screenplay by Zvyagintsev, Simon Lyasheko. With Iris Lebedeva, Dmitry Mazurov, Boris Kudrin. DCP courtesy MUBI. In Russian; English subtitles. 142 min.
As the invasion of Ukraine unfolds, a businessman in a fictional Russian city finds his carefully ordered life beginning to unravel under the twin pressures of wartime mobilization and mounting marital tension. His increasingly desperate attempts to preserve a comfortable existence set him on a terrifying moral descent. Reframing Claude Chabrol’s classic noir La Femme infidèle against the realities of wartime Russia, exiled director Andrey Zvyagintsev (Leviathan, Loveless) offers an unsparing examination of self-preservation, moral corruption, and systemic violence. Filmed on location in Latvia, where the streets of Riga become an uncanny stand-in for contemporary Russia, Cannes Grand Prix winner Minotaur fuses intimate marital drama with biting political allegory to create a gripping, unforgettable cinematic event.
