Bunker. 2026. France/Spain. Written and directed by Florian Zeller. With Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Stephen Graham. DCP courtesy Sony Pictures Classics. In English, Spanish; English subtitles. 126 min.
When Miguel (Javier Bardem), an acclaimed architect, accepts an unusual commission from a tech billionaire (Paul Dano), his wife, Sofia (Penélope Cruz), an editor, is unsettled by what the project represents: vast inequality and a world increasingly shaped by fear and isolation. Their opposing convictions begin to put pressure on their 17-year marriage, as Florian Zeller (The Father) turns a seemingly professional decision into an intimate examination of marriage, privilege, and the anxieties of an uncertain future. With real-life couple Bardem and Cruz bringing extraordinary depth to their roles, Bunker uses architecture—walls, shelters, and private spaces—as a way of thinking about the barriers we construct, both around ourselves and between one another.
