Wild Horse Nine. 2026. UK/USA/Chile. Written and directed by Martin McDonagh. With John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi. DCP courtesy Searchlight Pictures. 118 min.
Martin McDonagh shifts his attention to America (or, more precisely, Americans) in this two-hander that serves as a spiritual cousin to both In Bruges and The Banshees of Inisherin. Sam Rockwell and John Malkovich are a pair of CIA operatives sent to Easter Island from their home base of Santiago on the eve of the 1973 Chilean coup on a mysterious mission and clearly up to no good. Malkovich is excellent as Chris, a sick and weary old espionage hand whose code of silence on past misdeeds has been broken, and he and Rockwell share a charming yet uneasy on-screen chemistry. McDonagh’s sharp writing allows for humor, pathos, and regret to live alongside each other—often all in the same scene.
