La Gradiva. 2026. France. Directed by Marine Atlan. Screenplay by Atlan, Anne Brouillet. With Colas Quignard, Antonia Buresi, Mitia Capellier-Audat, Suzanne Gerin. DCP courtesy 1-2 Special. In French, Italian; English subtitles. 145 min.
In La Gradiva, the astonishing debut feature of accomplished cinematographer Marine Atlan, a group of French high school students go on a summer trip to Naples and Pompeii with their Latin teacher for an art-filled visit to the region’s frescoes and volcanic landscape. There, depictions of ancient tales of desire, death, gender, and class relations awaken sexual and identity journeys among each of them. Atlan’s sensible, captivating gaze pays equal attention to both group dynamics and each individual’s fantasies and personal frustrations on a trip that will change their lives forever.
