Obsession. 2026. USA. Written and directed by Curry Barker. With Inde Navarrette, Michael Johnston, Megan Lawless, Cooper Tomlinson. DCP courtesy Focus Features. 109 min.
In the movie Big, Tom Hanks made an innocent wish and became a man-child. In Obsession, Bear (Michael Johnston) makes a seemingly innocent wish and gets a psychotically obsessed girlfriend. The ultimate cautionary tale about seeing the world through rose-colored glasses, Obsession has become yet another megahit in the Blumhouse canon. Written, directed, and edited by the perversely clever Curry Barker, and apparently inspired by an episode of The Simpsons, Obsession is not only genuinely shocking and funny and best experienced in a packed cinema, it’s also a trenchant look at romance, sex, and basic human interaction—or lack thereof—among Gen Zers.
