When There Is No More Music to Write, and Other Roman Stories. 2022. Italy/France. Directed by Éric Baudelaire. DCP. In Italian; English subtitles. 59 min.
Éric Baudelaire’s admiration for the experimental work of avant-garde composer Alvin Curran, one of the founders of the politically active and improvisational music group Musica Elettronica Viva, led him to create a three-chapter, kaleidoscopic featurette that evokes Curran’s creative process. Employing Super 8 footage and excerpts from Michelangelo Antonioni and Annabella Miscuglio films, Baudelaire pays tribute to Curran’s adopted hometown of Rome, a city haunted by its Years of Lead and the assassination of Aldo Moro by the Red Brigades; the composer’s collaborative spirit; and his search for a more open, intuitive relationship with music, sounds, and images, here virtuously conveyed by Claire Atherton’s editing.
