In Elefsina Notre Amour, Mahdi Fleifel films the deserted ruins of abandoned shipwrecks—and a history of exiled and abandoned refugees—in Elefsina’s Mediterranean waters. A Drowning Man follows a struggling refugee in Athens who faces impossible decisions to survive far from home. The latter short film foreshadows Fleifel’s moving feature To a Land Unknown, in which the Palestinian director pays tribute to the aesthetic heritage of New Hollywood (namely Midnight Cowboy) and to millions of refugees from his homeland who deal with the soul-crushing weight of displacement.
