In Atlantics, director Mati Diop presents a captivating contemporary tale of migration from the vantage point of those left behind. Ada (brilliantly portrayed by Mama Sane) and her circle of friends encounter fantastical and frightening new experiences after their boyfriends disappear at sea. The first film directed by a Black woman to compete at the Cannes Film Festival, it was awarded the 2019 Grand Prix by the jury. In Atlantiques, her documentary short (and prelude), Diop focuses her camera on a group of young Senegalese men who discuss the possibilities and risks of crossing the Atlantic Ocean to find work in Europe.
