After their expulsion from Uganda in 1972, a Ugandan Indian couple settles in Mississippi with their daughter, Mina (Sarita Choudhury), to help run a chain of motels with their extended family. Unlike Mina, who has fully adjusted to her new lifestyle and community, they struggle with their new world and dream of returning to their home country. When Mina meets and falls in love with an African American carpet cleaner (Denzel Washington), tradition, prejudice, and conservative morals clash with a passionate romance born in the cultural melting pot.
