Jungfrukallan (The Virgin Spring). 1960. Sweden. Directed by Ingmar Bergman. In Swedish; English subtitles. 88 min.

With Max von Sydow, Birgitta Valberg, Gunnel Lindblom, Birgitta Pettersson. Bergman’s Oscar-winning, foreboding, medieval epic is stunningly beautiful in its depiction of nature, but it marks the last time, for a while, that reality would override the director’s personal obsessions. Aside from The Naked Night seven years earlier, this marked the beginning of a two-decade collaboration with the master cinematographer Sven Nykvist.
