River of No Return. 1954. USA. Directed by Otto Preminger. Screenplay by Frank Fenton, based on a story by Louis Lantz. With Robert Mitchum, Marilyn Monroe, Tommy Rettig, Rory Calhoun. DCP. 91 min.
Three misfits—a young boy, his ex-convict father (Robert Mitchum), and a saloon singer (Marilyn Monroe)—are brought together by the currents of destiny after the singer’s fiancé steals the father’s horses, pushing them into a perilous journey through the mountainous Northwestern landscape and the unforgiving rapids of Idaho’s Salmon River. In one of the first notable uses of CinemaScope, Otto Preminger brings a melodramatic touch to a sensual Western in which Mitchum and Monroe rely on their survival instincts to turn a dead-end journey into one of mutual trust.
