“There was a breathlessness and sort of glued-on innocence about her that I found appealing,” said Joseph L. Makiewicz after casting Marilyn Monroe for a minor role in All About Eve, one of Hollywood’s most memorable, self-reflexive tales of backstage drama, backstabbing rivalry, and raw ambition. Despite having her screen time reduced to just a few minutes, Monroe’s captivating presence among a star-studded cast launched her career in Hollywood, turning a one-week commitment into a long-term contract at 20th Century Fox.
