접속 (The Contact). 1997. South Korea. Directed by Chang Yoon-hyun. With Han Seok-kyu, Jeon Do-youn, Choo Sang-mee. In Korean; English subtitles. 104 min.
After co-directing landmark independent films with the 1980s activist collective Jangsan Kotmae, Chang Yoon-hyun entered the commercial Korean film industry with this breakout hit, following his studies in Hungary. The film tells the story of two emotionally wounded people who begin to heal through anonymous interactions in cyberspace—their indirect, mediated communication reflecting emerging patterns of digital-era relationships shaped by anonymity and distance. The Contact captures the cultural mood of 1990s Korea, a decade when grand ideologies were fading and personal desire came to the forefront. Korea’s highest-grossing domestic film of 1997, it was invited to the Forum section of the 1998 Berlin International Film Festival. Selected by actor Teo Yoo.
