낮은 목소리 (The Murmuring). 1995. South Korea. Directed by Byun Young-joo. In Korean; English subtitles. 93 min.
A landmark of Korean independent cinema, Byun Young-joo’s documentary was the first in a trilogy chronicling the testimonies and daily lives of survivors who had been forcibly conscripted as “comfort women” during World War II. Beginning in 1993 with the 100th Wednesday Demonstration in front of the Japanese Embassy, the film approaches its subjects not through an objectifying gaze but through solidarity between women—a perspective grounded in feminist insight and universal humanism. The first Korean documentary to receive a theatrical release, The Murmuring won the Ogawa Shinsuke Prize at the 1995 Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival. Selected by director Yoon Ga-eun.
