No Other Choice. 2025. South Korea. Directed by Park Chan-wook. Directed by Park Chan-wook. Screenplay by Park, Lee Kyoung-mi, Jahye Lee, Don McKeller, based on McKeller’s novel The Ax. With Lee Byung-hun, Son Ye-jin, Park Hee-soon. In Korean and English; English subtitles. 139 min.
A factory manager (Lee Byung-hun), content in his idyllic life with a wife (Son Ye-jin) and two children in a comfortable suburban home, declares, “I’ve got it all.” That blissful beginning quickly dissolves into farce when he is unexpectedly laid off from his job of 25 years. From then on, the realist drama spirals into a dark, satirical thriller, as the decent family man is transformed into a clumsy wannabe criminal. Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Lady Vengeance, The Handmaiden) confirms he is a champion of form by deploying precisely calibrated compositions, razor-sharp pacing, and expressive visual contrasts to deliver a tension- and humor-filled story of economic desperation. Each scene is an exhilarating set piece, making No Other Choice a masterclass in filmmaking.
