Harvest. 2024. UK/USA/Germany/France. Directed by Athina Rachel Tsangari. Screenplay by Tsangari, Joslyn Barnes. With Caleb Landry Jones, Harry Melling, Arinzé Kene. DCP courtesy MUBI. 133 min.
Athina Rachel Tsangari's fourth feature treads remarkable new ground for the Greek auteur: a sprawling English-language period piece adapted from the acclaimed 2013 novel by Jim Crace. At the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, in an unspecified village in the British highlands, an agrarian community contends with change—and the outsiders seen as ushering it in. As the introduction of property lines and agricultural profit rocks a communal social order, the human tapestry that unfolds sings with Tsangari’s signature acerbic precision and visual wit. Lensed in painterly 16mm by Sean Price Williams and featuring Caleb Landry Jones and Harry Melling at the helm of a standout ensemble cast, Harvest is a powerful allegory of dispossession and prejudice.
