The Last Time I Saw Ron. 1994. USA. Directed by Leslie Thornton. DCP. Courtesy EAI. 12 min.
Video Album #5. 1987. USA. Directed by George Kuchar. DCP. Courtesy EAI. 46 min.
This screening reprises films from a recent seminar: 2023’s Queer World-Mending, programmed by Jon Davies and Steve Reinke. Between goings on at the San Francisco Art Institute, George Kuchar’s Video Album #5 chronicles visits with filmmaker Curt McDowell while he was dying of AIDS-related complications. Kuchar wrote of this early video diary, “The tape records the whole season inside and out and the food that went in and the feelings that went out. It’s Easter time and the tone is one of a holiday feel instead of a hard-boiled bummer. All hard-boiled items are dyed for resurrection.” Opening the program is Leslie Thornton’s poignant elegy to Ron Vawter, composed from footage of Vawter filmed, just before his death, during the course of a theatrical production in Brussels.
