Horizons. 1973. USA. Directed by Larry Gottheim. 16mm. Silent. 75 min.
The silent overture to Gottheim’s Elective Affinities series, Horizons is a complex philosophical metaphor composed of four seasonal sections of landscape images that include visible horizons. The shots are assembled according to patterns resembling the rhyme schemes of classical poetry. This gives the viewer an opportunity to choose to make connections between shots in two, three, and four pairings as well as across the entire film. The viewer can also simply absorb the beauty of the images sliding by, letting the formal elements remain unconscious. Presented in a vintage 16mm print.
