In this group of early silent films, the slow passage of seemingly continuous time is shown to be an evolving process of changing states, and the experience of stillness and silence in cinema is revealed as an act of transformation. Fog Line uses a natural phenomenon to depict the incremental unfurling of a landscape. Corn, a film of simple ceremony and rich detail, was shot with a lens used in Ernie Gehr’s Serene Velocity (1970) and is presented here in its original camera roll. Doorway elucidates how the path and pulse of vision travels across and defines a threshold. The screening concludes with Barn Rushes, a film of ecstatic movement through repetition and rhythmic play with light. Presented in vintage 16mm prints.
