History, memory, music, ritual, and language are motifs that run like a thread through this retrospective, and in particular this program, which covers more than five decades of Gottheim’s life and work. It includes the recently restored Your Television Traveler, a work of complex collage and counterpoint, superimposing Cuba’s colonial and revolutionary history with actual and fictional footage of space exploration. Guided by the figure of the “TV Traveler” and Gottheim’s keen eye for imaginative, revealing juxtapositions, the film collides the constructs and hidden truths underpinning our political, geographical, and historical realities. This program also features Gottheim’s earliest film work, ALA. Made in 1968 with a group of Black and Latino students, Gottheim’s first completed film also marks the beginning of a lifelong preoccupation with using cinema as a conduit for exploring educational and political possibilities.
