Ride Lonesome. 1959. USA. Directed by Budd Boetticher. Screenplay by Burt Kennedy. With Randolph Scott, Karen Steele, Pernell Roberts, James Coburn, Lee Van Cleef. 73 min.
The sixth collaboration between director Budd Boetticher and Randolph Scott expands their acclaimed psychological westerns into the CinemaScope format, allowing the spare, existential drama to unfold against the magnificently desolate landscape of Lone Pine, a popular western location that Boetticher made his own. Scott portrays bounty hunter Ben Brigade, ostensibly tracking outlaw Billy John (James Best) but actually pursuing a more personal vengeance against Lee Van Cleef's Frank, who years earlier murdered Brigade's wife. The deliberate journey becomes a poker game of shifting alliances and revelations as two charismatic outlaws (Pernell Roberts and James Coburn, the latter in his film debut) join Brigade's party, along with a widow (Karen Steele) whose husband was killed by Apaches.
