The Awful Truth. 1937. USA. Directed by Leo McCarey. Screenplay by Vina Delmar. With Irene Dunne, Cary Grant, Ralph Bellamy. 91 min.

Dunne and Grant are famously co-starred in this comic Calvary---a couple's road to redemption paved with painful hilarity. This quintessential comedy of remarriage was made as a freelance assignment for Columbia Pictures, revitalizing McCarey's career after the commercial failure of Make Way for Tomorrow that same year. But when The Awful Truth earned McCarey a Best Director Oscar at the 1938 ceremony, he told the Academy, "You gave it to me for the wrong picture."

This film accompanies The Lady at 100: Columbia Classics from the Locarno Film Festival.
