Reinas (Queens). 2024. Switzerland/Peru/Spain. Directed by Klaudia Reynicke. Screenplay by Reynicke, Diego Vega. With Abril Gjurinovic, Luana Vega, Jimena Lindo. DCP courtesy Outsider Pictures. In Spanish; English subtitles. 104 min.
Swiss-Peruvian filmmaker Klaudia Reynicke’s third film is a coming-of-age story set in the politically charged climate of Peru in 1992. Carlos (Gonzalo Molina) is an absentee father, an unreliable dreamer, and an exaggerator to everyone he meets, including his own “reinas.” Carlos re-enters the lives of his daughters, Lucia and Aurora, as they are about to immigrate to the United States with their mother, which fuels an explosion of complex emotions. Through their frequent outings to the beach, driving recklessly and meeting new people, he opens up a space where the pain of the past meets hope for the future. In the spirit of the ’90s, Reinas is about the personal meeting the political; it’s a reckoning of familial acceptance and unconditional love in the face of the impending loss of home (both physical and imaginary).
