In the Summers. 2024. USA. Written and directed by Alessandra Lacorazza. With René Pérez, Sasha Calle, Lio Mehiel. DCP courtesy Music Box Films. In English and Spanish; no subtitles. 95 min.
Alessandra Lacorraz’s semi-autobiographical debut feature film is an intimate exploration of the relationship between two Latina sisters and their troubled father. Over two decades (and in four parts), we see Violeta and Eva grow from young kids to young adults over summer visits to Los Cruces, CA. Yet the center of the story is really their father, Vincente, played with much heart by René Pérez Joglar (aka Residente) in his acting debut. Vincente is an extremely intelligent man with self-sabotaging tendencies who loves his daughters but never seems to get it right. It’s a beautiful portrayal of the mistakes of parenthood, the trauma of childhood, and how time and forgiveness can beget understanding. Winner of the Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and Directing Award at Sundance 2024
