Minal Baig’s sophomore feature is a tender story about friendship on the shifting sands of Chicago’s notorious Cabrini-Green housing complex in 1992. Ten-year-old best friends Malik and Eric have grown up together telling silly jokes, jumping in contests in the courtyard, believing in magic, and full of imagination. But when a shooting shakes the community, their innocence is faced with a stark reality that challenges their tightly knit bond. In one of the best feature films in recent years, Baig deftly navigates the history of Cabrini-Green as a failed American experiment, while giving her characters the grace to have freedom both within and away from these increasingly oppressive structures. We Grown Now was nominated for three 2024 Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Feature.
