Join artist Cara Marie Piazza for a guided workshop in which we will learn how to use natural materials as a medium for painting and dyeing techniques. Participants will explore various kinds of natural material such as earth pigments, botanicals, roots, and honey. For the beginning of the workshop, Piazza will lead an illustrative world-building exercise followed by a demonstration of how to shift colors with pH modifiers. Afterward, participants will create three 8.5 × 11" watercolor paintings on paper using plant and botanical materials.
This 90-minute, in-person program is free. This workshop takes place in person at MoMA. To keep the workshop intimate, capacity is limited. Preregistration is required.
Cara Marie Piazza is a natural dyer and artisan. She is the head of Calyx Studios in Brooklyn. Calyx studios offers natural dye applications for fashion, interior design, and the arts. We create our conscious colors by only using natural dyestuffs such as botanicals, plant matter, minerals, non-toxic metals, and food waste, transforming each project into its own unique story. By sharing this knowledge, our studio believes we can help empower and heal with creative play. We offer workshops on both the public and corporate scale for natural dyeing, curating unique experiences merging healing, color resonance, and art.
