All We Imagine as Light. 2024. France/India/Netherlands/Luxembourg. Written and directed by Payal Kapadia. With Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam. DCP courtesy Sideshow. In Malayalam, Hindi; English subtitles. 118 min.
The hustle and bustle of Mumbai finds gentle expression in Payal Kapadia’s Cannes Grand Prix winner. Two nurses, far from their families in Kerala, share an apartment in the metropolis while each, in her own way, bears the pain of an unspeakable secret. When an older colleague, also a migrant worker, is forced out of her home in Mumbai, the two take a break to help her return to her seaside village, where the three bond and find relief in the open air. Even though the aching torment of alienation and societal expectations continues to follow them, they remain poised and offer each other resolute kindness and support. Kapadia’s sophomore feature, a follow-up to her outstanding fiction/nonfiction hybrid A Night of Knowing Nothing (2021), is a shimmering, poetic work that illuminates the beauty of sorority and the intimate lives of women.
