The oft-manipulated rituals of choosing a leader remain as fraught and relevant today as when the rites of papal selection were first codified by the Catholic church. Oscar winner Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front) directs an all-star ensemble led by Ralph Fiennes, who plays the cardinal in charge of the conclave to choose the successor to a suddenly deceased pope. It’s a tense, richly appointed thriller with a twist ending for the ages.
