Anora. 2024. USA. Written and directed by Sean Baker. With Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Yura Borisov. 35mm courtesy NEON. 139 min.
A star is born in Mikey Madison, who sparkles as a smart, ambitious, and charming exotic dancer from Brooklyn who lands in the lap of the hard-partying scion of a Russian oligarch. Writer/director Sean Baker’s eighth feature starts as an exploration of young lust/love in the ever-transactional 21st century, and evolves into a family drama, a chase movie, and a laugh-out-loud comedy. Baker widens the naturalistic storytelling style of his previous films without missing a step, and his keen eye for casting remains undimmed, as the supporting roles are filled with new and unforgettable faces. The final scene recalls both New Hollywood and the French New Wave in its startling ambiguity.
