Vermiglio. 2024. Italy/France/Belgium. Written and directed by Maura Delpero. With Tommaso Ragno, Giuseppe de Domenico, Roberto Rovelli, Martina Scrinzi. DCP courtesy Sideshow/Janus Films. In Italian; English subtitles. 118 min.
In Vermiglio, Northern Italy, a young WWII deserter is welcomed into vast, snowy mountains by a family of many, and chiefly by a paterfamilias who teaches children and older men how to read and write. Hidden feelings and passionate looks soon turn into words as a mysterious soldier becomes a suitor, unwittingly transforming a new time of peace and rebirth into one of turmoil and obscurity. Family stories, forbidden desires, and the ghost of Ermanno Olmi haunt Maura Delpero’s feature, which considers the uncertainty of life through the open, compassionate lens of childhood.
