When a middle-class lawyer is promoted to the position of investigating judge of Iran’s Revolutionary Court, he is proud to elevate his family’s standard of living. But domestic bliss is ruptured by his controversial new job and street protests ignited by the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old arrested for allegedly violating dress-code laws requiring a hijab. What begins as a simmering political family drama unexpectedly transforms into a gripping thriller, with suspense, wild chases, and violence. Mohammad Rasoulof, who fled Iran to escape an eight-year prison sentence for his provocative films and statements, crafts this riveting work of courage and urgency to reveal the misogyny and distrust permeating Iranian life. Shot in secret prior to the director’s departure from Iran, The Seed of the Sacred Fig received multiple awards at the Cannes Film Festival.
