With her feature-film debut, Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Annie Baker crafts a remarkably moving portrait of a single mother and her young daughter. In rural Massachusetts, over the summer of 1991, 11-year-old Lacy (a striking Zoe Ziegler) quietly examines the life of her New Agey mom Janet (an equally astonishing Julianne Nicholson) as a trio of friends and lovers enter and exit the duo’s orbit. Wise beyond her years, with dry humor to match, Lacy prefers the company of the adults despite their sometimes incongruent behavior. A coming-of-age film like no other, Janet Planet gently peels back the layers of introspective girlhood. Baker’s assured direction results in stunning compositions, foregrounding the inexpressible connection between Lacy and Janet, as well as their relationships with themselves.
