Oh, Canada. 2024. Canada. Written and directed by Paul Schrader. With Richard Gere, Uma Thurman, Michael Imperioli. DCP courtesy Kino Lorber. 95 min.
In a film about filmmakers and making memories, writer/director Paul Schrader takes us back and forth between choices made in the 1960s and the slippery recollections of an artist today. Reunited with Richard Gere (who he first directed in American Gigolo), Schrader deftly weaves flashback sequences (featuring Jacob Elordi) within a present-day documentary shoot about a subject who hasn’t quite reconciled what his life has meant for himself or others. It’s a nimble, thought-provoking triumph from one of the most influential filmmakers working today.
