| Abstract: | This collection documents the activities of Herman Daled and Nicole Daled-Verstraeten, Brussels-based collectors of Conceptual art primarily of the 1960s and 1970s. The records date from 1961 to 2012, with the bulk of the materials from 1964 to 1978. The collection reflects the couple's unique and close relationships with several artists, notably Marcel Broodthaers, Daniel Buren, James Lee Byars, Niele Toroni, and Lawrence Weiner. The materials include artist files, artists books and publications, unique items created by assorted artists, correspondence, numerous photographs, exhibition announcements and ephemera, and some business papers that document the Daleds' influential and prolific collecting activities. | |
In 1966, the Brussels-based Belgian couple Herman Daled (a radiologist born 1930) and Nicole Verstraeten (a lawyer born 1931), began collecting Conceptual art with their purchase of Marcel Broodthaers' Robe de Maria (1966). For the next twelve years, the Daleds embraced the tenet of Conceptual art that places the intellectual content of a work above its realization; they considered themselves primarily as conduits and communicators of the artists' work rather than passive collectors. Rather than simply purchasing artists' works, they strove to support artists directly in order to allow them to create their art beyond the conventional mechanisms of the art market. Herman and Nicole Daled funded projects, financed publications, and actively participated in events with the artists. A guiding principle of their collecting was that they exclusively bought directly from living artists. This straightforward dedication to the artist extended to their developing personal friendships with many artists, most notably Marcel Broodthaers, Daniel Buren, James Lee Byars, Niele Toroni, and Lawrence Weiner.
The Daleds chose to focus on contemporary art at the encouragement of Herman's supervisor at the time, Dr. Albert Claude, a cytologist and Nobel Prize laureate in medicine for whom Herman worked for six years. The Daleds soon discovered Brussels-based Marcel Broodthaers' work and were deeply impressed by his personality. Their encounter with the artist led to their first art purchase, Broodthaers' Robe de Maria (1966). The work was the first of approximately 80 additional works of art by Broodthaers the Daleds would eventually acquire. Their ensuing close friendship with the artist provided the Daleds access to the inner circles of the Conceptual art scene of the 1960s and 1970s, most notably in Belgium and New York.
The fruitful and innovative collaboration between the Daleds and numerous Conceptual artists included agreements in which the purchase of works by the collectors became a separate project subject to particular conditions. For example, the couple bought a work by and from Niele Toroni in 1969 and then purchased the same work again from the artist in January 1971 for a price that reflected the increase in the cost of living. In 1970 they signed a particular agreement with Daniel Buren; the Daleds received one work by the artist each month for a year, agreeing not to buy any other art works (with the purchase of works by Marcel Broodthaers being the only allowable exception). Details of this unique arrangement were published in 1971 under the title "a private collector," in Art & Project Bulletin 45. Also in 1970, Herman Daled visited Lawrence Weiner's exhibition in Berlin's Galerie Folker Skulima and bought all three of the exhibited works. However, because of their prior agreement with Buren, the purchase of Weiner's works was only finalized the following year in 1971. This interest in protecting artist rights developed further in subsequent projects. With the help of lawyer Michel Claura, Herman Daled professionally translated into French Seth Siegelaub's Artist's Reserved Rights Transfer and Sale Agreement in 1971. The original English-language edition of the contract had been published by Siegelaub a few months before; it guaranteed the artist rights in works that had already been sold. Following their interest in honoring the exchange of artistic ideas, Herman and Nicole Daled purchased a work by Ian Wilson that was based on a conversation between the artist, Herman Daled, and Fernand Spillemaeckers that had taken place on September 10th, 1972.
The Daleds' many activities also included their support in financing exhibitions and art happenings, including at exhibition spaces and galleries such as A 37 90 89, Garden Store Louise, and Galerie le Bailli. The alternative exhibition space, A 37 90 89, was established in Antwerp in 1969; under the direction of Kasper König, the space sponsored exhibitions and performances by artists such as James Lee Byars, Daniel Buren, Jörg Immendorff, Ben Vautier and La Monte Young. In February 1970, the Daleds organized James Lee Byars' T.V. Ball at Garden Store Louise in Brussels, Belgium. Among the works on view was The Pink Silk Airplane (also known as Robe pour cent personnes and A Pink Silk Airplane for 100, 1969), a huge rose-colored silk fabric covering 100 people sitting on the floor next to each other in rows of two as in an airplane. Under the artist's instructions, the fabric was cut into pieces large enough to accommodate two or three individuals over the course of the evening. In 1971, Nicole Daled organized Gilbert & George's first appearance as "Living Sculptures" in Brussels, where they met their future gallerist, Ileana Sonnabend. Later, in the shopping arcade Galerie le Bailli, in which several Brussels art dealers were opening galleries beginning in the early 1970s, the Daleds rented a vitrine and the front-facing wall opposite it. Beginning in March 1973, they presented a work by Daniel Buren there, the striped bands of wallpaper of which were replaced with new colors for each opening until 1975.
In 1978 Herman and Nicole Daled bought a series comprised of 70 works from the exhibition, Abdrücke eines Pinsels Nr. 50, wiederholt in regelmäßigen Abständen (30 cm) held at the Kunsthalle Bern from April through May 1978. This purchase marked the conclusion of the couple's intensive collecting activities together. This final joint purchase by the Daleds reflected their belief that their collection was now complete in representing the artists they felt were most important of that time. However, personal reasons also contributed to the end of their joint collecting activities as Herman and Nicole Daled separated in 1977, with Herman moving into the nearby Hotel Wolfers, a residential building in Brussels designed by Henri van de Velde in 1931. In the 1980s, Herman organized exhibitions at Hotel Wolfers of work by Robert Mapplethorpe, Niele Toroni, and Dan Graham.
Independently, both Herman Daled and Nicole Daled-Verstraeten continue to purchase works by young artists on occasion. Their ongoing support of art projects and institutions remains notable, including Herman Daled's involvement with the establishment of WIELS Centre d'art contemporain, the largest institution dedicated to contemporary art in Brussels, Belgium.

This collection documents the activities of Herman Daled and Nicole Daled-Verstraeten, Brussels-based collectors of Conceptual art primarily of the 1960s and 1970s. The records date from 1961 to 2012, with the bulk of the materials from 1964 to 1978. Herman and Nicole Daled enthusiastically supported the work of some of the most seminal and influential contemporary European and American Conceptual artists in the 1960s and 1970s; the records here document these personal and professional relationships and resulting art projects. The collection reflects the couple's unique and close relationships with several artists, notably Marcel Broodthaers, Daniel Buren, James Lee Byars, Niele Toroni, and Lawrence Weiner. The materials include artist files, artists books and publications, unique items created by artists, correspondence, numerous photographs, exhibition announcements and ephemera, and some business papers that document the Daleds' influential and prolific collecting activities. The records also reflect the careers and work of several artists, particularly Marcel Broodthaers, James Lee Byars, Gilbert & George, and Lawrence Weiner, with significant important documentation consisting of correspondence, photographs, exhibition announcements, and artist publications found in the Daled Papers. Researchers may be particularly interested in the records related to Marcel Broodthaers, which include numerous personal photographs of the artist with the Daleds, as well as installation photographs, correspondence, notes, and other items documenting various manifestations of his Musée d'Art Moderne, Départment des Aigles and other projects. Also of particular note are the abundance of unique paper works and correspondence created by James Lee Byars and sent to Herman and Nicole; these items reflect Byars' playful fascination with certain colors (black, gold, white, red, pink) and materials (metal, silk, feathers, tissue paper, stones), as well as experimentation with typefaces and handwriting.
Series I: Haus der Kunst Exhibition Materials comprises the bulk of the Daled Papers. The records were displayed, along with numerous works of art collected by the Daleds, during the exhibition Less is More. Pictures, Objects, Concepts from the Collection and Archive of Herman and Nicole Daled 1966-1978 from April 30 to July 25, 2010 at the Haus der Kunst in Munich, Germany. Combined, the records provide historically significant documentation of many important projects initiated by key figures in the Conceptual art movement of the 1960s and 1970s in both Europe and the United States, including Marcel Broodthaers, Daniel Buren, Dan Graham, Niele Toroni, Carl Andre, Jacques Charlier, Peter Downsbrough, James Lee Byars, and others. Materials include numerous photographs of artists and projects, correspondence between the Daleds and artists, exhibition announcements, artists' books and publications, and ephemera. The records date from 1966 to 1978 and are arranged alphabetically by artist last name or gallery name. The exhibition brought together records originally housed separately in both Herman Daled's and Nicole Daled-Verstraeten's homes; therefore, researchers should carefully consult the folder inventories of all series in the collection as materials overlap significantly in each.
Series II: Herman Daled is divided into two subseries. Subseries II.A Artist Files contains personal correspondence between Herman Daled and various Conceptual artists, as well as some clippings, notes, and exhibition announcements and invitations. The records date from the 1960s to 1990s and are arranged alphabetically by artist last name. Subseries II.B: Daled Publications is a very small subseries containing some of the artists' books that Herman Daled published through his "Daled Brussels" press. Most of these publications were reprintings of exhibition catalogues and artists' books. The publications are arranged alphabetically by artist last name.
Series III: Nicole Daled-Verstraeten is a small series mostly consisting of numerous exhibition announcements and invitations related to artists whose work the Daleds primarily collected, as well as galleries they followed or supported. Researchers should note that the majority of the archival material in Series I originated from Nicole's home; this contributes, in part, to the small amount of materials in Series III and researchers interested in Nicole's general involvement during the collecting years of 1966 to 1978 should examine records in Series I. However, it also is important to note that many of the records in this series and in Series I were produced and/or kept by both Herman and Nicole Daled until their divorce in 1977. The records in this series date from 1965 to 1990 and are arranged alphabetically by artist last name or gallery name.
Series IV: Art Collection Files is a small series comprised of records kept by Herman Daled documenting his and Nicole's collecting activities and includes detailed acquisition information, loan forms, conservation reports, financial information, and some related correspondence. The records date from the beginning of Herman and Nicole's collecting activities in 1966 to the eventual purchase by and transfer of the Daled art collection to The Museum of Modern Art in 2011. Researchers should note that this series is restricted until 2036.
Series V: Accretions is a small series of various items that was transferred to the MoMA Archives from the Department of Drawings and Prints after the Herman and Nicole Daled Papers were formally processed in 2013. They were added to the collection in August 2022.
The records are open for research and contain some restricted materials. In particular, researchers should note that Series IV: Art Collection Files 1960s-2011 is restricted to the public until 2036.
The Herman and Nicole Daled Papers are the physical property of The Museum of Modern Art. Literary rights, including copyright belong to the authors or their legal heirs and assigns.

The Seth Siegelaub Papers at MoMA contain information on several of the same artists documented in the Daled Papers, especially concerning the The Artist's Reserved Rights Transfer and Sale Agreement its related correspondence between Seth Siegelaub and Herman and Nicole Daled. The MoMA PS1 Archives housed at MoMA also contain photographs and other records pertaining to related exhibitions involving some similar and overlapping artists found in the Daled Papers.
The Herman and Nicole Daled Papers were acquired by the Museum of Modern Art by partial gift of the Daled Collection in 2011.

The bulk of the materials dates from the 1960s and 1970s and was in good condition. Paper clips and staples have been removed and replaced with archival clips as necessary. All materials have been rehoused in archival folders. Acidic materials such as newspaper clippings have been encapsulated or isolated by acid-free paper or Mylar as warranted. Photographs were placed in Mylar polyester protective sleeves. Degrading adhesives such as mailing labels, envelopes, pressure sensitive tape (masking, clear, packing), gallery labels, rubber bands, and glue were cleaned, removed and/or isolated with buffer paper inserted as necessary. Oversize posters and other materials were flattened and rehoused in appropriately sized acid-free containers. However, unique items creative by artists, such as James Lee Byars, have not been flattened or unrolled in order to preserve the original shape of the works. Many photographs were individually catalogued and digitized; researchers may access these digital images on the Museum Archives Image Database (MAID).
Folder and item titles and descriptions used by the Haus der Kunst, Herman Daled, and Nicole Daled-Verstraeten were maintained where appropriate, although some were changed, augmented, and added for the sake of consistency and clarity.
The majority of the collection, specifically Series I: Haus der Kunst Materials came to the The Museum of Modern Art in 2011 directly from the Haus der Kunst after being displayed for an exhibition, with some personal materials also coming from Herman Daled and Nicole Daled directly. The processing archivist conducted further on-site appraisal of an accrual of personal records with Herman Daled and Nicole Daled-Verstraeten in 2012; this accrual accounts for the majority of the materials now found in Series II: Herman Daled and Series III: Nicole Daled-Verstraeten.

Series II: Herman Daled 1960s-1990s |
||
Subseries II.A: Artist Files 1964-1990 |
||
|
Subseries II.A: Artist Files Subseries II.A: Artist Files contains personal correspondence between Herman Daled and various Conceptual artists, as well as some clippings, notes, and exhibition announcements and invitations. The correspondence especially reflects Herman's continuing friendships with artists such as Dan Graham, Daniel Buren, and Niele Toroni. Of interest are the unique items of correspondence created by James Lee Byars and sent to Herman, which include materials such as various types of tissue and other paper, metal orbs, stones collected from a beach, and a dinner knife inscribed by the artist, among others. The materials in this series date from 1964 to 2011 and are arranged alphabetically by artist name. Researchers should note that many of the records created by Herman documented the business aspects of collecting art; these records are housed in Series IV and are restricted until 2036. Other records created by Herman Daled can also be found in Series I. |

Subseries II.B: Daled Publications 1960s-1980s |
||
|
Subseries II.B: Daled Publications is a very small subseries containing some of the artists' books that Herman Daled published through his "Daled Brussels" press. Most of these publications were reprintings of exhibition catalogues and artists' books. Researchers should note that some of the artists' books and catalogues found in Series I: Haus der Kunst Exhibition Materials are "Daled Brussels" publications as well. The publications are arranged alphabetically by artist last name. |

Series III: Nicole Daled-Verstraeten 1965-1990s |
||
|
Series III is a small series mostly consisting of numerous exhibition announcements and invitations related to artists whose work the Daleds primarily collected, including Daniel Buren, Jacques Charlier, Gilbert & George, and Lawrence Weiner, as well as galleries they followed, such as A 379089 and Gian Enzo Sperone. While the series contains very little personal correspondence between Nicole and artists, a rare exception is the prolific assortment of uniquely-crafted letters and objects from James Lee Byars; the prevelance of Byars' correspondence from 1970-1971 especially reflect the integral role the Daleds played in realizing several of Byars' art projects, including The Black Book and T.V. Ball. Researchers should note that the majority of the archival material in Series I originated from Nicole's home; this contributes, in part, to the small amount of materials in Series III. However, it also is important to note that many of the records from Nicole Daled located in this series were produced and/or kept by both Herman and Nicole Daled until their divorce in 1977. Reflecting this, much of the correspondence from James Lee Byars in Series III, for example, is addressed to both Herman and Nicole, as well as to their son Pierre. The radio program recordings located at the end of the series contain CD copies made from Nicole Daled-Verstraeten's own copies; the original recordings were taped by Nicole onto cassettes and then later transferred to CDs. The records in this series date from 1960s to 1990 and are arranged alphabetically by artist last name or gallery name. |
