The creation of a boundary is the most fundamental act of architecture. Through separation, boundaries allow difference to flourish and create spaces in which new ideas and organizational forms can take root. The schoolyard is an archetype of this relationship: inside the school, structured learning takes place; out in the yard, new games emerge. Mischievous actions that take place during recess find their way back into the classroom, and eventually out into the city.
Recess PS1 combines a fascination with enormous lightweight structures and the use of cheap industrial materials, encouraging us to consider how the smallest gesture has the potential to determine a large space. The aim is to create an immense volume without mass. A clearing in the city. A space for recess.
