Following the courtyard’s geometry, a triangular boundary is traced. An extraction site is built within this perimeter. As the soil is carved out and piled on the narrowest corner of the triangle, a sloped surface is created, highlighting the relationship between void and mass. In its simplicity and neutrality, the pyramidal form can accommodate various functions—symbolic, contemplative, playful, performative—while revealing that this intervention does not depend on anything other than the site and the people who inhabit it.
The act of carving the courtyard evokes both the unearthing of an ancient ruin and the extraction of material from a quarry. It oscillates between a metaphoric search for a distant past (memory) and the explicit act of building (creating a narrative), suggesting that the nature of architecture is both projective and retrospective, and, above all, never static.
