This Week at MoMA: May 23–30

This week, we’re taking the long view with an eye toward Memorial Day. While many are taking this week/weekend to escape the city, we’re kicking off summer at MoMA with these events and activities:

• On Tuesday, sign up for a Degas in Process: Making a Monotype workshop and make your own print. Artists from the EFA Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop will introduce contemporary approaches to the monotype printmaking process.

• Join a special Gallery Session on Wednesday at 1:30 and hear from psychedelic light show designer Joshua White on his life and work creating the renowned light and color visuals of the Joshua Light Show.

• On Thursday and Friday catch a pair of art-filled shorts by the filmmaking duo Straub-Huillet: one explores the work of Paul Cézanne using passages from Joachim Gasquet’s 1921 memoir of the artist; the other, A Visit to the Louvre, offers a fierce critique of the presentation of art in museums.

• And be sure to include a visit to MoMA PS1 in your plans. Newly opened exhibitions include a solo show of work by Cao Fei, who blends fantasy and reality across a range of mediums, and an installation that documents the pioneering early performances of Puerto Rican artist Papo Colo.
