One of four artists featured in this year’s New Photography exhibition, Roe Ethridge has contributed photographs to many international magazines, including the New York Time Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, W, Visionaire, I-D, Vice, Artforum, Flash Art, and Art Review. Ethridge shoots in “editorial mode” and also borrows images already in circulation—including outtakes from his own commercial work, some of which have already been published in other contexts. In the video interview above, he discusses the ways in which he orchestrates “visual fugues,” a term borrowed from music to suggest the weaving in and out of images in contrapuntal dialogue.
