Carroll Dunham Seven from Female Portraits 2000

  • Not on view

These are not so much portraits as caricatures of portraits, each with a ropelike black frame that lends a seriousness to the disturbing figures Dunham calls "deformed characters." They began as quick marker sketches, which Dunham scanned into the computer and colored digitally. The studio then spent months trying to match printing inks to the fabulously elusive colors of the digital images, before ultimately printing them as lithographs.
