This imagery was inspired by the Swiss mountains where Bourgeois skied in her youth, but the undulating forms also suggest a mutability between natural and bodily forms—a feature often found in her work. These sheets comprise but a sample of the twenty-seven studies, states, and variants through which this composition evolved.

How we identified these works

In 2018–19, MoMA collaborated with Google Arts & Culture Lab on a project using machine learning to identify artworks in installation photos. That project has concluded, and works are now being identified by MoMA staff.
