Bourgeois created this composition by hammering a nail and a screwdriver into the surface of a thin sheet of copper, which she then used as a printing plate. When the plate was wiped with ink, some caught on the indentations. After a sheet of paper was placed on the plate and it was run through the printing press, flickering lights and darks appeared and defined the image.
